Dubai Electricity and Water Authority Receives GPM Sustainable Project Management Centre of Excellence Award

Dubai,UAE/Fort Wayne, USA  28th April 2014: HE Saeed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has been awarded for the authority’s ongoing pursuit of greening its project management framework by implementing international best practice for green business excellence.

Joel Carboni, Founder and President of GPM Global handed over the award to HE Saeed Al Tayer at the annual ‘Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition’ (WETEX) at the stand of Dubai Carbon.

“Sustainability is fast becoming the driver of business change and innovative ideas.” HE Saeed Al Tayer said after the ceremony. “DEWA is committed to make the switch towards green project management for all its activities and will train over 30% of relevant staff in the next years.”

Similar to HE, a 2013 survey of global CEO’s showed that 93% believe Sustainability will be key to the future success of their business, yet, they are not satisfied with business progress in tackling global sustainability challenges, particularly in the areas of reducing energy consumption, minimising electronic waste and developing a circular economy.

The Green Project Management® Centre of Excellence Distinction (GPM CoE) aims to distinguish entities that show leadership and declare a commitment to Best Practices in Green Project Management®.

HE Eng. Waleed Salman says: ‘Dewa’s corporate sustainability program includes a green strategy aiming to protect the natural environment, conserve resources and take into account social aspects. Our commitment to the GPM Centre of Excellence is key for us to enact this strategy.’

The GPM Centre of Excellence award will be given for the first time to DEWA, a leader in innovation and use of Best Practices providing energy and water solutions to Dubai’s fast growing economy and population. DEWA’s Vision: ‘A Sustainable World Class Utility’ summarizes its commitment to a different way of thinking about driving and supporting successful economic growth.

Excellence in project management is about achieving objectives on time, within scope, and on budget, while creating positive impacts for the environment and society; and this is clearly DEWA’s vision and commitment – says Joel Carboni, Founder and President of GPM Global. “We are ecstatic about giving our first award ever to DEWA and to start work with them in the coming months to achieve the different training and execution milestones.”

Additionally, Dubai Carbon signed a Memorandum of Understanding to directly partner with GPM Global to drive growth of the GPM Center of Excellence in the region.

Dubai Carbon is also receiving the GPM Center of Excellence award becoming the second entity to do so, further underscoring Dubai’s commitment as a leader of the Green Revolution in alignment with Dubai’s Vision 2021.

Ivano Iannelli, CEO of Dubai Carbon explains: ‘We have been working with GPM Global for a few months now. We believe in their vision and their award winning methodology to drive sustainability into project management. We are partnering with them in the region to make this vision a reality.’

ABOUT DUBAI CARBON CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

The Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence was launched by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2011 as a public-private partnership to fast-track clean energy project development in the last years of the Kyoto Protocol.

The Centre is the first body of its kind in the region and aims to leverage Dubai’s economic potential in carbon through the Clean Development Mechanism and other best practices. The DCCE is a key component of the Supreme Council’s efforts to develop a sustainable-energy economy for Dubai and plans to offset several million metric tons of carbon annually by selling carbon credits on the international market.

Dubai Carbon conceptualises, manages, executes and monetises greenhouse gas reduction measures. By doing so, it addresses climate change and promotes sustainable development across the region in an economically viable way. The Emirate of Dubai is becoming a low carbon economy and Dubai Carbon is both the enabler and knowledge repository of this process.
